His full remarks: "America since the Age of Exploration has been a melting pot of people and cultures. For centuries, people fleeing poverty or persecution have come to our shores seeking refuge from their troubles. My parents are only the most recent additions to this long, illustrious history. My mother came to this country seeking economic opportunity when her home country of Colombia suffered from a 40% poverty rate. She left a country which is still suffering from the ravages of a drug war which nearly claimed her life in a bombing in Cali. My father came here a political refugee from Cuba who had to flee a government which was persecuting him for exercising his right to free speech. He was tortured for 3 weeks and then thrown in jail for 2 years for "anti-revolutionary conduct," which is what the Cuban government calls political dissent. Today, 24 years after my parents landed in Newark Airport, I am able to find meaningful work that my mother couldn't find in Colombia and I am able to exercise political rights that my father could only dream about those years he languished in a Cuban jail. As a fellow in the PA Coordinated Democratic Campaign, I work with an incredibly diverse and talented group of people who value the contributions of immigrants and their children and who want to elect people to preserve the opportunities that my parents had in coming to this country and the opportunities that they were able to give me. That's why I'm proud to be PA and I'm proud to support Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine, and all our Democratic candidates! It is truly a priviledge to have the opportunity to do my part. It is also my privilege to introduce a man who has dedicated his life to improving the lives of others from his service at a Jesuit mission in Honduras to Capitol Hill, el futuro Vice Presidente de los Estados Unidos, el Senador Tim Kaine!" — with Ricardo Luis Rojas Estrada.
